Morning Glory

It's Fall. Summer foliage and warmth have been slowly slipping from us. Just this past week, nighttime temps started diving. I added a blanket at night and in the morning, the leaves responded with new bursts of colour.

On Friday, I came out the front door as the sun cleared the hills in back of our house. The light flared the trees into vivid colour; their fallen leaves blazed up and glowed from the ground below. It was breath-takingly beautiful.

Halloween is this week -- the kids are so excited!

Colour Spectrum

James started stimming again about school tomorrow: "There's no school tomorrow?"

We'll get this about 20 times today. I decided to change things up a bit.

Wish they still sold this t-shirt!
-- Take 1 --
Me: "James, what's school look like?"
He: *Look of "that is a dumb question"*

-- Take 2 --
Me: "James, what colour is school?"
He: "Yellow."
Me: "What colour is your classroom?"
He: "Blue."

-- Tangent --
Me: "What colour am I?"
He: appraising look ... "Silver."
Me: "What colour are you?"
He: "Shiny."

Love it!

Magic Marker Monday: Picto Name

We've seen letters like these before, when James was in a mainstream preschool in the afternoons. This time he was able to do more colouring himself, and work on cutting and pasting the letters himself.

A very festive project from summer school!

Magic Marker Monday: Blue Period

Found this on the bulletin board outside James' classroom as I waited to pick him up after school. How nice it is to see his work up with his peers'!

I love all the blues and how full of energy that flower is, right in the middle of the page and reaching UP - yes!! It's totally how I see him growing in his new school environment.

Magic Marker Monday: Rainbow Spelling Words

James is really taking off in his new classroom, and doing amazingly better with his school work. I am so very thankful for his new aide, who is making the hugest difference in our lives. We went from a situation where James was not learning, resisted vigorously going to school, and becoming a disciplinary problem to one where he was participating with his class in class work, much happier to come to school, and making progress with doing more work independently.

Case in point -- rainbow spelling practice!
He scored 100% on the test, too.
Normally James needs someone prompting him through his spelling word list. He insists on a yellow, #2 pencil, and gets frustrated part way through the list. This week, his aide showed me the simple spelling flash cards she'd made for him; she printed the words first in colour and James then traced them in pencil. This could explain why last week James wanted to write the spelling list by himself -- in crayon. I printed the lines for him and the result was delightfully colourful.

Not content with that, James went on to write words in crayon -- something he usually did with pencil or pen, as he'd snap the waxy sticks.

Oh, and instead of touch math (old class and aide), he's memorized addition facts so he can add 3 columns of numbers and is getting better at subtraction. Again, this is the difference that a well-matched aide can make. She tells me she's making up multiplication cards for him to use. I cannot tell you how grateful I am that there are people like this woman out there to help children like James. She is helping to give him tools, education, and creativity.

And hold on to your hats -- there's an ostrich report in progress; with drawings!!!

Magic Marker Monday: Word Wheel

Summer school work that comes home in James' backpack is refreshingly meaningful this year. Also, well-thought out and relevant for what he's been learning in school.  Such a nice change from last year!

On Monday, James brought home a word wheel. His teacher this year said is was helpful for her regular classroom with full inclusion students, and she said it went over well in the class that day.
Nice sun and detail on that pail!

The wheel underneath has 5 letters and matching pictures.

When we got home, we practiced words together. James' big sister was quick to remind me she'd made a ladybug word wheel back in Kindergarten. That made James beam.

I'll bet we can fit a few more summer-themed wheels -- maybe one like a clock (dock, sock, rock, lock) or tree (knee, see, bee, whee) ...

Magic Marker Monday: Crayon Prowess

James has a love-ate relationship with crayons. That's right, "ate," and I bet you can guess what that means.

When not coveting or biting into those waxy, paper-covered cylinders of the rainbow, James has tried to colour. At first, when he started showing an interest in objects, he had a lot of trouble just them picking up. His grip could best be described as a rigid fist for the next year or so. He would either do a few tiny, circular doodles or go off the paper in a kind of frenzied, Richter-scale kind of kinectic storm.

And very soon into the performance, the crayon would snap. And tears and a howling distress followed. "It's BROKEN!!!" he'd bellow. Later, as his vocabulary improved, he'd add "Can you fix it?" Sigh and colour us blue as we'd stop and put the crayons away in their box.

This is what James accomplished, during his class' Easter party last month:

I know he has a one-on-one aide, but look what James can do with this assistance. And because I was there, helping with the event, I know that even with a noisy party, and a reluctance to finish this activity, no crayons were broken.

I look at this and see so much better control of the crayon and behaviour. I see a masterpiece.

SOOC Saturday: Fall

James is down with a flu or a nasty stomach bug. In between trying to get him more comfortable, I've been distracting myself with photos I've snapped while on the go these past couple of weeks. Fall sure is pretty here in Sonoma County!

Vineyards:

This is a vine at someone's house ...
that is surrounded by vineyards.

Farms:
Pomegranates

Two butterflies on a honeysuckle vine.

Glowing geraniums.

Caught a hummingbird!

The vaquero and his horse transformed into the Legend of Sleepy Hollow:
Made for a few smiles on our drives to/from Big Sister's school.

Trees as I walked to the parent-teacher conference for James:

Amy at Marvelous Mommy's blog had a great reason to celebrate 11/11/11. I'm linking to the  SOOC action over there. Come take a look and share some of yours.

SOOC Saturday: Colourful Market

Last weekend was a gorgeous day. Even though the harvest was mostly in, the market still shone with brilliant colours under a very blue sky. Luckily, James was dressed to match. He tends to wander in crowds, and I need to be able to track him.

Love those day-glo track pants!

My bread boy.

Love the crates of peppers!

The SOOC colours were a bit faded, so I tweaked the shot to make them come back here.

Mmmm, now I want to roast some fresh peppers and make some soup!

SOOC: Halloweening

This year, James has been anticipating Halloween with great excitement. Almost every day he asks if we are going Trick-or-Treating tonight. His sister keeps showing him on their calendars how many more days until the big event. Last night, he practiced Trick-or-Treating before bedtime with his sister.

The really big thing James has been looking for is Halloween decoration on houses. As reported, I haven't seen early as many as in years past, but thank goodness more and more people are getting into the spirit and decorating their homes. Every day, we drive or walk around and look for more decorations.

This weekend, we added to our own with a test carved pumpkin by James' Big Sister. While she was carving, I got distracted by all the orange hues in the pumpkin innards and shell.

Late to the party but enjoying another week of participating in the SOOC action at Marvelous Mommy's blog. Come on over to see more or join in!
